The Indian automotive market is set to witness two significant launches in the coming months as MG Motor and Kia have officially announced the launch dates for their highly anticipated SUVs – the MG Hector Hawk and the Kia Sorento. According to industry reports, the MG Hector Hawk will make its debut in India on August 12, 2026, while the Kia Sorento is scheduled to arrive on August 28, 2026. These launches are expected to intensify competition in the midsize and premium SUV segments, which have been growing steadily in the country.

The MG Hector Hawk is positioned as a sportier, more aggressive variant of the popular Hector, featuring a distinctive blacked-out grille, new alloy wheel designs, and a dual-tone exterior paint scheme. Under the hood, it is likely to retain the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and 2.0-litre diesel unit as the standard Hector, with power outputs of 141 bhp and 168 bhp respectively. The Hector Hawk will also come equipped with MG's latest i-SMART connectivity suite, a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard. With an expected price range of ₹18-22 lakh (ex-showroom), the Hawk will directly rival the Tata Harrier and the Hyundai Tucson.

On the other hand, the Kia Sorento is a premium seven-seater SUV that will be brought to India via the CKD (completely knocked down) route. It will be powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 199 bhp and 440 Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Sorento will feature a host of luxury amenities, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree camera. Kia is expected to price the Sorento between ₹30-35 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a premium alternative to the Toyota Fortuner and the Jeep Meridian.

“The timing of these launches is crucial as the festive season approaches, and both MG and Kia are looking to capitalise on the strong demand for SUVs in India,” analysts say.

Both companies have been tight-lipped about the exact specifications and pricing, but they have confirmed that the vehicles will be showcased at dealerships across the country ahead of the official launch. The MG Hector Hawk will be produced at MG's Halol plant in Gujarat, while the Kia Sorento will be assembled at Kia's Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh. This local assembly is expected to help keep costs competitive, although the Sorento's premium positioning will still place it above the Hector Hawk in terms of price.

In terms of sales, the SUV segment has been a bright spot for automakers in India, with models like the MG Hector and Kia Seltos consistently featuring among the top-selling vehicles. The introduction of the Hector Hawk and Sorento is expected to further boost the companies' market share, especially in the premium category. However, analysts caution that the ongoing semiconductor shortage and rising input costs could pose challenges to production schedules and pricing strategies. Despite these hurdles, both MG and Kia have expressed confidence in meeting their launch timelines and delivering a compelling product to Indian consumers.
