Maruti Suzuki August Sales Rise 21% to 2.19 Lakh Units
Maruti Suzuki India reported a robust 21% year-on-year increase in total sales for August, reaching 2.19 lakh units, driven primarily by a 35% surge in passenger vehicle (PV) sales. The company's domestic PV sales stood at 1.84 lakh units, up from 1.36 lakh units in the same month last year, reflecting strong consumer demand across its hatchback, sedan, and SUV portfolios. Total domestic sales, including commercial vehicles, grew by 21% to 2.09 lakh units, while exports rose by 20% to 10,000 units. The company attributed the growth to improved supply chain conditions and the launch of new models, which have resonated well with buyers.
Within the PV segment, utility vehicles (UVs) continued to be the growth engine, with sales jumping 45% to 68,000 units, as models like the Brezza, Grand Vitara, and Fronx gained traction. Hatchbacks, including the Alto and Swift, saw a 12% increase to 70,000 units, while sedans grew 18% to 25,000 units. The compact segment, comprising the Baleno and Celerio, posted a 30% rise to 48,000 units. Analysts note that the shift towards UVs is a structural trend, driven by rising preference for spacious and feature-rich vehicles, even as entry-level segments remain subdued due to high ownership costs.
Despite the strong performance, Maruti Suzuki's market share in the PV segment has been under pressure from competitors like Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Mahindra, which have aggressively launched SUVs and electric vehicles. However, the company's August numbers indicate a recovery, as it continues to expand its SUV lineup and strengthen its CNG portfolio. In the first five months of FY25, Maruti's total sales reached 10.2 lakh units, up 9% from the same period last year, with PV sales growing 14% to 8.9 lakh units.
| Segment | August 2024 (units) | August 2023 (units) | Growth (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total Sales | 2,19,000 | 1,81,000 | 21% |
| Passenger Vehicles (PV) | 1,84,000 | 1,36,000 | 35% |
| Utility Vehicles (UV) | 68,000 | 47,000 | 45% |
| Hatchbacks | 70,000 | 62,500 | 12% |
| Sedans | 25,000 | 21,200 | 18% |
| Exports | 10,000 | 8,300 | 20% |
Analysts say the growth is partly due to a low base effect, as August last year was impacted by semiconductor shortages. They also point to the upcoming festive season, which typically drives higher sales, as manufacturers and dealers ramp up inventory. However, they caution that rising input costs and intense competition could pressure margins.
“The strong double-digit growth in PV sales indicates recovering demand in urban markets, but the sustainability depends on the monsoon’s impact on rural areas and the overall economic sentiment,” said an industry analyst.
Maruti Suzuki’s performance also reflects broader industry trends, with the Indian PV market expected to post its highest-ever annual sales this fiscal year, crossing 4.2 million units. The company’s focus on CNG vehicles, which now account for over 20% of its total sales, aligns with the government’s push towards cleaner fuels. Additionally, Maruti is preparing to launch its first electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, by early 2025, which could further boost its market position.
Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki plans to expand its production capacity to meet growing demand, with new plants in Haryana and Gujarat. The company’s order backlog for popular models like the Grand Vitara and Fronx remains strong, indicating sustained demand. As the festive season approaches, dealers are optimistic about record sales, though they remain cautious about inventory levels and supply chain disruptions.
For consumers, the increased competition and model launches mean more choices and better value, especially in the UV segment. Maruti’s August performance is a positive sign for the auto sector, which has been grappling with high fuel prices and financing costs. With the festive season around the corner, all eyes will be on whether the momentum can be sustained.
