2 August 2026 By Sankar Kumar

The Indian auto industry witnessed a mixed bag of performances in July 2026, with leading manufacturers reporting varied sales numbers. Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker, continued its dominance, selling a total of 1,50,000 units during the month. This included domestic sales of 1,35,000 units and exports of 15,000 units. The company's strong performance can be attributed to its diverse portfolio of compact cars and SUVs, which remain popular among Indian consumers.

Hyundai Motor India, the second-largest player, also registered healthy sales, dispatching 65,000 units in July. Of these, 55,000 were sold domestically, while the remaining 10,000 were exported. The Korean automaker's Creta and Venue SUVs continue to drive demand, along with its recently launched models. Meanwhile, Tata Motors reported sales of 50,000 units, with electric vehicles contributing a significant 10,000 units. The company's focus on EVs has paid off, with the Nexon EV leading the charge in the electric segment.

Other notable performers included Mahindra & Mahindra, which sold 35,000 units, driven by its popular XUV700 and Thar models. Kia India sold 25,000 units, with the Seltos and Sonet maintaining steady demand. At the lower end of the spectrum, Atul Auto reported sales of 5,000 units, reflecting a niche but stable presence in the three-wheeler segment. Interestingly, the overall passenger vehicle wholesales in July 2026 reached 3,50,000 units, showing a year-on-year growth of 5% compared to July 2025.

Analysts say the growth in July sales is a positive sign for the industry, though they caution that supply chain issues and rising input costs could impact future performance.

Despite the overall growth, some manufacturers faced challenges. For instance, Atul Auto, a smaller player, saw a decline in sales compared to the previous month, though it managed to maintain its export base. Industry experts attribute the overall uptick to the festive season beginning and improved consumer sentiment. However, they also note that the market remains highly competitive, with companies offering discounts and promotions to attract buyers.

Looking ahead, automakers are optimistic about the coming months, with new model launches and the upcoming festival season expected to boost demand further. The electric vehicle segment is particularly poised for growth, with Tata Motors leading the charge and others like Hyundai and Mahindra ramping up their EV offerings. As the industry evolves, staying updated with monthly sales data becomes crucial for enthusiasts and buyers alike.
