India's passenger vehicle (PV) market continued its robust momentum in the first half of 2026, with total sales climbing 18% year-on-year, according to data from Autopunditz. The growth was led by a significant shift in fuel preferences, with CNG and electric vehicles (EVs) emerging as the primary drivers, while petrol and diesel, though still dominant in volume, saw comparatively slower expansion. This trend underscores a structural change in the Indian automotive landscape, driven by rising fuel costs, environmental concerns, and supportive government policies.

The overall PV market, including all fuel types, recorded cumulative sales of approximately 2.1 million units during January–June 2026, up from around 1.78 million units in the same period last year. The growth was broad-based across segments, but the fuel-wise breakdown reveals a more nuanced story. Petrol vehicles, which account for the largest share, grew by a moderate 12%, reaching 1.32 million units. Diesel, once the workhorse of the Indian market, saw a marginal increase of just 4%, totaling 0.42 million units, reflecting a gradual decline in its appeal, especially in the passenger car segment.

In contrast, CNG and EVs posted remarkable gains. CNG vehicle sales jumped by 32% to 0.28 million units, while EV sales surged by 45% to 0.18 million units. Combined, these alternative fuels now represent over 20% of the market, up from 17% a year ago. The growth in CNG is particularly notable in the compact SUV and hatchback segments, where consumers are increasingly drawn to its lower running costs. EVs, meanwhile, are gaining traction in urban centres, aided by expanding charging infrastructure and new model launches.

Analysts attribute this shift to a combination of factors, including volatile crude oil prices, government incentives under the FAME scheme, and a growing awareness of environmental sustainability. "The market is clearly moving towards cleaner and more economical fuel options," said an industry analyst, who requested anonymity. "While petrol remains the default choice for many, the margin of growth is now coming from CNG and EVs." This sentiment is echoed by automakers, who have been aggressively expanding their CNG and EV portfolios to meet changing consumer demand.

The trend has significant implications for the industry. For one, it is prompting manufacturers to re-evaluate their powertrain strategies, with several announcing plans to phase out diesel from smaller vehicles and invest heavily in electric and CNG technology. It also presents challenges for fuel retailers and infrastructure providers, who must keep pace with the growing demand for CNG stations and EV charging points. The government's push for a gas-based economy and its commitment to electric mobility are likely to further accelerate this transition in the coming years.

As the second half of 2026 unfolds, industry observers expect the momentum to continue, with festive season sales likely to provide an additional boost. However, they caution that supply chain constraints and global economic uncertainties could temper growth. For now, the Indian PV market stands at a pivotal juncture, with the fuel mix evolving faster than ever before. The data from Autopunditz serves as a clear indicator of the direction in which the industry is headed.
