India's electric vehicle (EV) penetration has crossed the 12% mark for the first time in June 2026, according to a recent report by Business Standard. This milestone is primarily driven by the robust growth in the electric two-wheeler (e2W) segment, which continues to dominate the EV landscape in the country. The overall EV penetration, which stood at around 10% in early 2026, has seen a steady upward trajectory, thanks to increased consumer awareness, government incentives, and expanding charging infrastructure.

The e2W segment alone accounts for nearly 70% of all EV sales in India, with major players like Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and Bajaj Auto leading the charge. In June 2026, e2W registrations surged by 35% year-on-year, pushing the segment's penetration to over 18%. This growth is supported by state-level subsidies under the FAME II scheme and the introduction of affordable models with improved range and battery technology. Meanwhile, electric four-wheelers (e4Ws) have also seen a uptick, with penetration reaching 3.5%, driven by new launches from Tata Motors, MG Motor, and Mahindra & Mahindra.

“The 12% penetration mark is a significant achievement for India's EV ecosystem. It reflects the collective efforts of policymakers, manufacturers, and consumers in adopting sustainable mobility. However, we need to accelerate the pace to meet our 2030 target of 30% EV sales,” said an industry analyst quoted in the Business Standard report.

The following table provides a segment-wise breakdown of EV penetration in India for June 2026:

SegmentPenetration (%)YoY Growth (%)
Electric Two-Wheelers (e2W)18.235
Electric Three-Wheelers (e3W)8.520
Electric Four-Wheelers (e4W)3.545

Despite the positive momentum, challenges remain, including high upfront costs, range anxiety, and inadequate charging infrastructure in rural areas. However, with the government's renewed focus on green mobility and private investments in battery manufacturing, the outlook for EVs in India remains bright.
